SMART/MAHER TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD:
The VFW Department of Illinois is committed to honoring America’s exceptional educators whose dedication, leadership, and commitment to our nation’s values inspire patriotism, strengthen civic responsibility, and prepare future generations to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Through their influence in the classroom and beyond, these distinguished educators help preserve the principles of freedom, service, and democracy upon which our nation was founded.
AWARD CATEGORIES:
Eligibility is open to all currently certified or licensed educators teaching students in grades K–12. Previous national award recipients are not eligible for consideration. Nominations may be submitted by the educator, a fellow teacher, supervisor or administrator, family member, or any other individual who wishes to recognize the nominee’s outstanding dedication and service to education.
K through Fifth Grade:
Kindergarten through fifth-grade teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds, building the academic, social, and civic foundations that students carry throughout their lives. Their guidance, encouragement, and example help inspire curiosity, confidence, responsibility, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
Sixth through Eighth Grade:
Sixth through eighth-grade teachers play a critical role during a formative stage of a student’s development, helping young people build confidence, independence, responsibility, and stronger academic skills. Their guidance helps shape character, encourage good decision-making, and prepare students for the challenges of high school and beyond.
Ninth through Twelfth Grade:
High school teachers play an essential role in preparing students for adulthood by strengthening their knowledge, character, independence, and sense of civic responsibility. Through their guidance and example, they help shape informed, responsible, and engaged American citizens ready to contribute to their communities and nation.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION:
#1. A completed Nomination Form.
#2. A nomination letter(s) including:
- Nominations information (Name, Title, address, phone number, email address)
- All Post-level nominees should provide a one-page resume as a minimum or up to five pages, including the resume, as a maximum of documentation of their teaching experience (for example: resume, references, news articles, etc.)
- An head-and-shoulder photo of themselves, if available.
- Supporting justification for the nomination.
DEADLINES:
- December 1st: Entries are due to the local VFW Post.
- December 15th: VFW Post entries forwarded to the VFW District.
- January 1st: VFW District entries forwarded to the VFW Department.
- February 1st: VFW Department entries forwarded to the VFW National Headquarters.
