Nina L. Petru was elected as Illinois VFW State Surgeon at the 97thannual State Convention June 16, 2018 in Springfield, Illinois.
Nina served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1980-2004, earning her eligibility to the Veterans of Foreign Wars through her deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), where she provided command and control for over four hundred personnel while overseeing the busiest aerial port of debarkation during the largest troop movement since World War II.
Nina joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2004, upon return from her deployment where she became a Life Member of Scott Post 4183 in Belleville, Illinois. Shortly thereafter she transferred to the Judd Kendall Post 3873, in Naperville, Illinois where she was appointed Judge Advocate.
Nina was elected Post Commander in 2012, serving two terms, during which her leadership aided the post in achieving All-State status in 2012 and 2013, and All-American status in 2012 for the first time since the post was chartered. In 2013, Nina was among those appointed "National Aide De Camp” to the Commander in Chief.
Nina has continued to serve her post as chairperson of the Blood Donor Program and as a former three-year trustee and house committee member. Nina is in her third year as the 19th District Adjutant, second year as Inspector and has served seven years as the chairperson of the District Blood Donor Program. She has also served as the Judge Advocate for the 19th District. She has served the Department of Illinois admirably as Assistant to the Blood Program Director from 2014 - 2016, Officer of the Day 2016-2017, and the Emergency Services Coordinator.
Nina is a Gold Legacy Life member, Lifetime member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and a past instructor for the USAF Youth Relations Program and past instructor for the Boy Scouts of America Aviation Merit Badge Clinic. Nina has an Associates Degree in Allied Health Sciences from the Community College of the Air Force and was a Nationally Board Certified Surgical First Assistant and Surgical Technician Specialist. Nina was also the Director of Product Distribution and Transportation for Life Source Blood Services prior to her retirement in 2016.
