Happy To Facilitate for Independence
VFW Post 5788 - Lockport

The quality of life will greatly improve for one local veteran when he takes his seat in a donated electric power chair.
The new motorized mobility scooter was recently donated by Home Helpers / Lockport to the Lockport VFW Post 5788. The Lockport VFW Post and its Ladiesí and Menís Auxiliary work closely with the Illinois Veteransí Home at Manteno in Manteno, III. and has committed the donated scooter to the facility for one of its residents.
The scooter is a state-of-theart power chair manufactured in Duryea, Penn. by Pride Mobility Products. It has a very tight turning radius that makes it easy to maneuver in tight corners and can operate up to15 miles on one charge.
"Preserving an individualís independence is what our business is all about," says Ed Kerfin, president of Home Helpers / Lockport, providers of non-medical, in-home assistance. "Donating this chair to the VFW enables us to help one of our local veterans live more independently."
The device will be greatly appreciated by the lucky recipient who resides at the Manteno Veteransí Home.
"We have a sprawling, 122-acre campus, and we are deeply appreciative that this gift will allow greater independence and mobility for one of our residents," said Manteno Veteransí Home Administrator Reginald Booker. "Many thanks to the Lockport VFW and Home Helpers for thinking of our residents and their needs."
Once the donated scooter arrives at the Manteno Veteransí Home, the on-site rehabilitation specialist will fit the motorized chair to the needs and size of one of the residents.
The Manteno Veteransí Home is one of four operated statewide by the Illinois Department of Veteransí Affairs, and has approximately 350 beds.
"The Manteno facility is the closest to our Post," points out John Burke, post commander for the Lockport VFW Post 5788. "We work very closely with the staff there and provide assistance whenever we can. Donations such as this scooter are extremely appreciated and we are happy to facilitate the delivery."
